Turkey Valley girls get split with Stars

Lead Summary

After struggling to get their first win of the season at Riceville, the Turkey Valley softball team won their second on the very next try when they beat Starmont in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday on the road.   The Lady Trojans won 3-2, but the Stars came back for the second-game win, 5-3.   "Getting those two wins was a good, positive pick-me-up for our girls right before the most important part of the season: district play," said coach Debbie Nesvik.   "It was very much needed, as well as 'due time' for them, as they have been working hard to get the kinks out. I hope they carry over the intensity they brought for their wins to Monday's game against Central Elkader!"   That regional first-round game was to be played Monday at Elkader. If the Trojan girls survived that test, they would play again on Wednesday against and at top-ranked Kee.   Not only did the TV girls win their second straight game of the season against Starmont, but it was the second consecutive contest decided by one run. But going into the seventh inning, it was a 1-1 game.   Morgen Kuennen started a rally with a single, then took second on a steal and scored as Shayla Kuennen delivered a clutch hit — a double — with two outs.
