Trapshooters sweep St. Ansgar in opener

New Hampton’s trapshooting team kicked off its 2019 season Tuesday by sweeping the top three spots at a meet against St. Ansgar at a wind-swept Mitchell County Trap Range just outside of Osage.
“Osage is always windy because it kind of sits on top of a hill,” said Gayle Poncelot, a member of the team of coaches leading New Hampton this season, “and then you get a day like we had and it’s really windy. I thought, for the most part, our kids handled it pretty well.”
New Hampton Black, which was led by Tristen Schmidt’s 49, won the meet with a 227, 23 shots better than runner-up New Hampton Red while New Hampton White finished with a 198. The host school’s top team, St. Ansgar Red, finished with a 185.
