Sweet round of golf

Lead Summary

Eric Olson had plenty of worries heading into his New Hampton girls golf team’s season opener Friday.“We hadn’t really been on a course all spring,” he said. “Heck, we had been outside five times, and I was really, really concerned that we hadn’t hit a chip shot yet … and our first putting outside was on the practice green right before the meet.”But Olson need not have worried as his Chickasaws showed why everyone expects New Hampton to be one of the best teams in Northeast Iowa this season as they won a triangular on Friday and then easily claimed the title at the Waterloo Columbus Invitational Saturday.“I think once we got through our first holes, we were fine,” Olson said. “They were just so excited to finally get a chance to play. I think we were wondering if we were ever going to get outside this year.”New Hampton opened the season by beating Don Bosco and Tripoli at Jesup. The Chickasaws, led by medalist Allison Nuss’ 41, fired a 193, to win the triangular by 52 strokes over second-place Don Bosco.Morgan Nuss finished as medalist runner-up with a 47, freshman Emma Ewert had a 50 and Barbara Schwickerath overcame an opening-hole 12 to finish with a 55 to round out the scorers.Maybe the star of the day was the Jesup Golf and Country Club.“It was in really good shape,” Olson said.
