Relay for Life raises more than $34,000

Lead Summary

Relay For Life took place on the courthouse lawn Thursday night with residents from all over the county joining together to remember and honor loved ones that battled cancer.
Chickasaw County has thus far raised $34,000 for the American Cancer Society with donations still coming in.
Relay for Life-Chickasaw County event leader Lacy Carolan said many visitors came to the event and the committee appreciated the participation of all that attended for any length of time.
“We are a small but strong group,” said Carolan about the turnout.
She said she heard from multiple people that the courthouse lawn was a great location for the event.
“It’s a nice area that is under utilized,” said Carolan. “The area really lets us open up the event to the community and allows us all to be more aware of what we have here.”
Many visitors were also spotted checking out the veterans memorial that they may not have looked at in the past.
“Everything went really smooth with the event even with a few hitches,” said Carolan. “There is never going to be a perfect night that works for everyone.”
The Dollars For Scholars students that volunteered to help out were also a huge help.
“We are so appreciative of all the time they put in and the event wouldn’t have gone as smoothly without them,” said Carolan.
The committee was also very appreciative of the new activities that were made possible from great volunteers and residents. A memory garden was available with flowers being donated during the event as well as a photo booth that was done by the Blue Iris.
