Officials get Hall nod

Lead Summary

Cary Griffith looked over at his longtime friend and partner, Jeff Trost, and smiled.“Remember that night we came home from West Union,” Griffith asked?“Oh my gosh, that’s a night you don’t forget,” Trost answered. It was years ago, but the two Nashua residents had officiated a playoff basketball game on a night when a winter storm took a dramatic turn for the worse.“They got on the PA and said there was a blizzard out there and anyone who wanted to stay could stay in the gym,” Griffith said, “but Jeff and I figured, ‘It can’t be that bad’ so we headed home. And we found out it was that bad. … It took us forever and our families weren’t too impressed with our smarts.”The two men have a million stories about their officiating days. They were two of the best officials in northern Iowa — the dozens of state tournament games they worked are proof of that — and a couple of weeks ago, they were honored by being inducted into the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Basketball Officials Hall of Fame“It’s a really nice honor,” Trost said, “and to be able to do it with Cary — my longtime partner and a great friend — makes it even nicer.”
