NH girls take ranked Comets to five sets

Lead Summary

Now that Maddi Moorman is back in the New Hampton volleyball line-up, Lauren Frerichs is out.    One of these days, hopefully, coach Jess Geerts will have a completely healthy team put together on the court. But it didn’t happen Tuesday, as the Chickasaw girls fell in five sets to 4A, eighth-ranked Charles City.    A couple of the sets were about as close as they could get as the opener went into extra points before the NH girls won 26-24. The Comets rallied for the next two wins, 25-19, 25-20, but the Chickasaws tied the match with a 25-23 win, sending the contest into the fifth set, which Charles City won 15-11.    Frerichs went down with a rolled ankle in the final set of the New Hampton tourney Saturday, where the Chickasaws beat ranked Don Bosco and Sumner-Fredericksburg before falling in the finals to 1A ranked Tripoli. As good of a job sophomore Ashlynn Tank did in the absence of Frerichs, it’s hard to replace the athleticism and experience of the junior.     “Ashlynn did a fantastic job stepping into the setter role!” Coach Jess Geerts continued, “She stepped in and did well against Tripoli in game two of the finals on Saturday, so seeing that left me very confident she could handle the job.”
