It’s D-Day for voters

Decision Day has arrived.And for some — namely the employees of the Chickasaw County Auditor’s Office and a number of precinct election officials, who are called PEOs — today’s General Election Day will be a long one.For them, Election Day begins at 6 a.m. and ends sometime — if all goes well, of course — around midnight.“We do have some split shifts with our PEOs, but there are some who work the entire day,” said Joan Knoll, who as Chickasaw County auditor serves as the county’s election commissioner. “They put in a very long day and they’re very much appreciated by us.”And while a record number of voters cast ballots during Iowa’s early voting period that began on Sept. 29 and ran through Monday, if history is any indication, thousands of voters will make their way to the county’s 10 voting sites to cast ballots today.
