A diamond draw

 New Hampton and Waverly-Shell Rock came to Mikkelson Park virtually tied atop the Northeast Iowa Conference baseball standings.Four hours later, nothing had changed as the two powerhouses battled to a draw — with New Hampton winning the first game 1-0 in eight innings while the Go-Hawks claimed the nightcap 4-0.“That’s what high school baseball is all about,” New Hampton coach Cory McDonald said. “That’s two heavyweights battling it out and leaving it all on the field.”But if the Chickasaws repeat as NEIC champs — and they control their own destiny — the ending of that first game will be talked about for an eternity.After Connor Cleveland’s little blooper found a hole in short right-center field with one out, Zach Wemark put down a perfect sacrifice bunt.But as the throw was being made to first, Cleveland glanced to third and saw no one there.For what happened next, please see the July 1 Tribune.
