Chickasaws split with Decorah, falls to Go-Hawks

Save for the scoreboard, Tuesday night’s New Hampton/Waverly-Shell Rock baseball game was pretty much a dead heat.
Both teams had seven hits, both teams struck out seven times and both teams had two extra-base hits, so despite the fact that his team lost 9-5, New Hampton coach Cory McDonald liked a lot of what he saw from his team.
“It basically came down to they got a couple more timely hits than we did,” McDonald said, “and even that, we had a couple of third outs with runners in scoring position that were hit right on the nose, just right at people.”
So despite the fact that New Hampton is coming off a 1-2 stretch — the Chickasaws split with Decorah on Monday night in a doubleheader that had been suspended on May 25 because of the weather — McDonald was chipper on Wednesday morning.
“It’s going to be a dogfight in our conference,” said McDonald, whose team was 10-3 overall and 4-2 in the Northeast Iowa Conference heading into Thursday night’s non-conference game with Denver. “I thought that all along, and nothing I saw the last two nights has changed my mind.”
