Chickasaws give home fans victory over 4A Mason City

Lead Summary

Not much appears to have changed in the Chickasaw volleyball program this year. Even though New Hampton lost 11 seniors last year — including all its statistical leaders — the NH girls started the home season by providing a dominating 3-1 win over Mason City Thursday.
There were two big non-team differences. Last year’s home opener was still played in the old Chickasaw gym, and no one wore masks.
This year masks are required of fans, but the surreal setting of a gym full of masked fans didn’t faze coach Jess Geerts in the least. “I guess we’re so used to it now, it wasn’t a big deal,” she said after the 25-7, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21 win.
A long serving stretch with Emma Rosonke behind the wheel was a factor in the first set, by the time Rosonke finished the stretch and threw in a few aces the Chickasaws were up 14-3. Rosonke led the team for the night behind the line with a 23-for-25 effort with four aces.
